In one of the first games of the 2010 pa football season, the Penn Wood Patriots are rolling all over Conwell Egan 26- 0. Penn wood’s running game has looked solid Egan’s version of the wildcat has been struggling so far. Penn wood rb Wah’fe Ranger has been lighting it up. He just took a punt back 45 yards for a score.
Coach Tom Ryan and the Radnor Raiders have a certain swagger about them this season. Just being on the practice field for an hour you can tell that the Raiders have a different attitude about football this year. Radnor is coming off of a 5-6 season, and are itching to improve in many ways.
This is Ryan’s 4th year with the Raiders, which means that this is his first true class of players. “We’ve had all of these guys for their entire high school careers now. These players have made a serious commitment since November 30th. Some of them pulling doubles in the off-season. Getting in the weight room at 6:00am then playing their spring sports in the afternoon.”
Radnor’s goal is simple this year. Postseason. It would be the first time in school history that the program has made it to the postseason.
The Raiders will look to experience all over the ball to lead the way. Starting with the Quarterback position where Senior Rob Collins will look to lead the way. ”Rob’s doing a great job for us this year. He has really developed in the off-season and is taking on the leadership role so far this season.” Says offensive coordinator and former UD/WCU Rockstar Eric Ruffenach (Nice enough plug coach?) Collins looked poised in practice displaying that leadership throughout the day.
Collins should have plenty of protection this season and no lack of talent to spread the ball to.
The Raider’s O-line will be anchored by returning starter Center Greg DiCocco “Greg is a great player, he will do a lot for us this season.” Says Ryan.
As for the playmakers, there is an arsenal. Starting with 1,000 yard rusher Vinny Caniglia. “Vinny is a true leader. He leads by example, and everyone follows.” Caniglia had an impressive Junior season, and should have an even better season with other skilled players taking the load off of his shoulders.
Senior Rob McCurdy and Juniors TaJae Bryant and Tim Wilson have all been impressive during the off-season. McCurdy provides a big target for Collins and has a ton of big play capability. Wilson has a great burst and is an obvious talent. While Bryant has thoroughly impressed everyone he has been in front of this season. “We have some talent at the skill position. Rob and Tim are both great players. TaJae has been a stud during camp. The three of them should be serious threats this season.” says Ryan.
Defensively the Raiders will look to a lot of the same players. Caniglia will lead the way defensively. With Bryant, Wilson, and DiCocco all playing significant roles defensively as well. LB Matt Brigg will also contribute at the LB position.
The Raiders begin their quest for the postseason on Friday night in the Prevost Bowl against Archbishop Carroll.
Drink a gallon of whole milk, eat everything, get to the gym (twice on some occasions), run, maybe another gallon of milk. That was just a standard day this off season for 2009 2nd Team All-State Defensive Lineman Zac McMenamin. McMenamin Interboro’s co-captain set goals for himself and for his team this off-season, and he has done everything in his power to reach those goals.
In the off-season McMenamin spent a ton of time at the Greyskull gym in Glenolden, PA working on his power and explosion. When he wasn’t there he was with TeamGridiron working on his speed and agility, or he was with his team leading off-season training sessions.
“I worked pretty hard this year, we all worked pretty hard. We want to get back to where we were last year. We want another DelVal title, want to get to the District Championship, and go further” says McMenamin the brother of former Interboro QB and TeamGridiron product Jim McMenamin.
Coach Lennox and The Bucs never seem to disappoint when the regular season arrives. Especially last season, when the Bucs had one of their most impressive runs in school history. McMenamin and company are hoping that last years experience will help them get further this season “We have a lot of seniors this season, most of these guys played a lot last season. Hopefully getting to experience that last year, will help us this season.” as for McMenamin himself his expectations for himself are set just as high ” I would love to be 1st team-all-state this season. I want to be one of the best defensive lineman out there.”
With his strength and determination McMenamin may not be far off of that goal “Zac’s looked great, he’s a beast.” says Interboro coach and former Widener U standout Adam Parcell.
Although they are loaded with seniors, the Bucs will look to some newer faces in the backfield this season. Last year the Bucs were led offensively by QB Brett Creighton, and RB’s Joe Pfaff and Charles Bolger. After losing all three to graduation the Interboro saying would be “Reload..not rebuild.”
In the backfield the Bucs will look to Seniors Chris Long and Mitch Helmandollar. Long played significantly last season in the backfield, but will become more of the feature back this season. Helmandollar also impressed last season and should see some serious touches this season. The duo will also receive help from Junior Dave Kennedy.
At Quarterback the Bucs will look to Senior Adam Smith. Smith was an all-league defensive back last season, and will make the transition to offense this season. ”Adam is ready to go. He spent a ton of time throwing this off season, getting on the same page with Hunter Jackalous, they both look great.” says McMenamin.
Defensively the Bucs will look to senior Chris Goss to help anchor the defensive line with McMenamin.
The Bucs take action this Friday night hosting the Springfield Cougars at 7:30 on South Ave.
Expectations are high this summer in Drexel Hill, and for the first time in a long time, they have every reason to be. The Bonner Friars are coming off of their first .500 or better season in years, and the cupboards are anything but empty. With the Friars dropping to 3A this year, they have high hopes of getting to the post-season for the first time in a very long time.
A brunt of those expectations will fall on the shoulders of Senior QB and TeamGridiron product Sean Quarterman, and Quarterman is more than ready to handle the pressure. This year he looks to be one of the premier quarterbacks in the county, and maybe even the state. His coaches already notice a major improvement from last season which watched him throw 13 TD strikes. “Sean has taken the leadership role on our offense this year…He spent a lot of time working in the off season and its showing in his play.” Says offensive coordinator Greg Bernhardt. At 6’3 205lbs Quarterman is a smart kid, with a ton of upside and a live arm. “The other day he made a throw that very few Quarterback’s in this state can make.” Said Bernhardt.
Bonner’s offense won’t rely solely on Quarterman’s right arm. Their are quite a few playmakers in the Friars arsenal this year. Junior RB John McGilligan and Senior WR Jamie Juisti both look to play a major role in Bonner’s offense this season.
McGilligan is an electric player and has next level speed. This should show to be a breakout year for the junior. Juisti is a flat out playmaker who averaged nearly 23 yards a reception last fall while registering a kick off, punt return and receiving touchdown on the year.
Defensively the Friars will look to seniors Marcus Collins and Dan Dougherty to lead the way. Collins just looks like a player on the field. He has a great linebacker build and was an all-star hurdler in the off-season. “Marcus should have a big year for us. He’s a smart kid, and he is an unbelievable athlete.” Said LB Coach Tom Fitti.
Dougherty has started his senior camp off with a match lit underneath him. ” Doc is just out there taking over. This kid is such a leader. When we’re having an off day, he’s the first one to step up and set the tempo.” Says Fitti.
The leadership on defense, and the playmakers on offense are just a few of the reasons the Friars are so excited about this season. Coach Tom Oropeza’s regime has finally kicked in and the players are taking to it. Their is a swagger in the air on Lansdowne Ave and it is a swagger that is much needed. Although they will drop from 4A to 3A the Friars will still see some very familiar and very tough opponents. Including neighborhood rival Cardinal O’Hara.
How will this season turn out? Only time will tell.
